Propionic acid (C₃H₆O₂) is a colourless, oily liquid with a pungent, rancid odour similar to body sweat or vinegar. It is miscible with water and many organic solvents and can cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

Common uses of Propionic Acid:

    • Used as a mould inhibitor in bread, cheese, and other baked goods (E280).
    • Added to animal feed to prevent mould growth and extend shelf life.
    • Intermediate in the production of herbicides, plastics, and pharmaceuticals.
    • Fungicide and antimicrobial agent for stored grains and silage.
    • Used in the manufacture of propionates (e.g. calcium propionate, sodium propionate), which act as preservatives.
    • Acts as a solvent for plastics, resins and dyes.
    • Intermediate in organic synthesis.
